Tile Tips

Basic Tile Maintenance

Caulk and Grout exposed to water and cleaning products may require repair. Proper maintenance of caulk and grout can prevent water damage and help your kitchen and or bathroom preserve its beauty. After installation, holes, openings or cracks in your grout or caulk may appear and will require minor touch-ups before further damage can be done.

There are three main elements to your tile work:

Grout: Grout is the filling between the tiles bonding them together and actually solidifying your wall, floor or countertop. Caulk: Caulk is the grout mixed with some silicone to make it more flexible. It is used in areas where the tile meets another solid adjoining surface such as your granite countertop, tub deck, walls or shower pans.

Sealer: Once the tile has been grouted, cleaned and dried, grout joints must be treated with a silicone sealer (KP recommends approximately 3days after installation). Natural stones such as granite, slate and marble can also benefit from the sealing process. Grout is porous and sealing at this time will simplify future maintenance (epoxy grouts do not require a sealer). KP's overall recommendation is to seal at least twice a year for maximum protection.

Grouting, Caulking, and Sealing

Grouting: Repairing grout can be done simply:

1. Use the correct grout color. If unknown, contact your KP designer for more information

2. Mix dry grout with water to an even consistency. Stir out any clumps to create a putty texture similar to that of cookie dough. This can be done in a small cup or bucket, depending on the amount of grout that is needed.

3. Dab on grout to fill the cracks or holes

4. Use a clean and damp sponge to wipe away excess grout; ensure your water and sponge are clean to reduce a grout haze

Caulking: Repairing the caulk can be done without difficulty:

1. Use the correct caulk color. If unknown, contact your KP designer for more information

2. Use a caulk gun to apply as much caulk as needed along the joints; between the adjoining surfaces where filling is required.

3. Wet your finger and wipe away any excess

4. Clean area with a clean, wet sponge creating a smooth even line

Sealing: Sealing your tile is a simple process:

1. Wear gloves as some sealers can irritate the skin. If this happens wash the affected area with water and soap.

2. With a sponge or cloth, make an even coat of sealer over the stone and or grout joints

3. Wipe down the sealer (evenly) to avoid any excess which will dry in puddles on your tile
